Introduction to Iceland
Iceland’s best-known natural attractions may appear close together on a map, but weather, road conditions and the number of worthwhile stops can make journeys take longer than expected.
An eight-day itinerary provides enough time for Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and a carefully paced journey along the South Coast without attempting to drive the entire Ring Road.
The final route should always be adapted to the season. Winter offers dark skies and the possibility of the Northern Lights, while summer brings long daylight hours and greater flexibility for exploring rural areas. Iceland’s official visitor information also directs travellers towards current safety and travel guidance when planning journeys around the country.
Your Sample Itinerary
See how your journey could unfold. Every day can be adapted around your interests, pace and travel dates.
Part One: Reykjavík
Days 1-3
-
Arrive at Keflavík International Airport and travel towards Reykjavík.
Depending on your arrival time, stop for a geothermal bathing experience on the Reykjanes Peninsula or continue directly to the capital.
Check into your hotel and spend the evening walking around central Reykjavík, the harbour and the streets surrounding Hallgrímskirkja.
Overnight: Reykjavík
-
Spend a full day exploring Iceland’s capital.
Visit Hallgrímskirkja, walk along the waterfront to Harpa Concert Hall and explore the shops, cafés and colourful streets of the city centre.
Choose a museum or exhibition connected with Icelandic history, settlement, geology or maritime life. In the evening, try Icelandic seafood, lamb or a more contemporary Nordic-inspired restaurant.
Overnight: Reykjavík
-
Leave Reykjavík and begin your journey through the Golden Circle.
Visit Þingvellir National Park, the geothermal area surrounding Geysir and the powerful Gullfoss waterfall. Be sure to visit one of the areas geothermal heated spa’s such as world famous Blue Lagoon. Allow enough time at each location rather than treating the route as a race between car parks.
Stay in the countryside for a quieter evening and easier access to the next stage of the journey.
Overnight: Golden Circle or South Iceland - there are some great Airbnb accommodation options all along here
From Reykjavík’s colourful streets to waterfalls, glaciers and the dramatic landscapes of Iceland’s South Coast
Part Two: Iceland’s South Coast
Days 4-9
-
Continue towards Iceland’s South Coast.
Stop at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss before travelling towards the coastline around Vík. Walk along a black-sand beach from a safe distance from the water and admire the cliffs and sea stacks.
Conditions on Icelandic beaches can be dangerous, so local warning signs and safety guidance must always be followed.
Overnight: Vík or surrounding area
-
Travel farther east through changing landscapes of lava fields, mountains and glaciers.
Depending on your chosen route and season, visit the Skaftafell area, join a professionally guided glacier activity or continue towards Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and the nearby coastline.
This is one of the longest days of the journey, so an early start and realistic number of stops are essential.
Overnight: Southeast Iceland
-
Begin travelling west, revisiting the South Coast at a slower pace.
Stop at places missed on the outward journey or add a guided seasonal experience. Possible options include a glacier walk, lava cave, ice cave, geothermal bathing or a quieter waterfall away from the main route.
Stay near Hella, Hvolsvöllur or another suitable South Iceland base.
Overnight: South Iceland
-
Return towards Reykjavík using the route most appropriate for the season and weather.
Include a geothermal bathing experience, a local food stop or additional time on the Reykjanes Peninsula where conditions allow.
Spend your final evening in Reykjavík with a relaxed dinner and one last walk through the centre.
Overnight: Reykjavík
-
Travel to Keflavík International Airport for your flight home.
Allow generous time for the airport transfer, particularly during winter or periods of difficult weather.
Self-drive or guided travel?
Self-drive
A hire car provides flexibility and works particularly well during the brighter months and is generally very affordable. Drivers must be comfortable adapting plans around weather, wind and road conditions - the roads are however very quiet and generally straight as soon as you get out to the South Coast.
Private driver
A private journey offers flexibility without requiring anyone in your group to drive. This can be particularly valuable during winter.
Small-group tours
A Reykjavík-based or multi-day guided programme can simplify logistics and provide experienced local guidance.
The best choice will depend on the season, budget, confidence and amount of independence you prefer.
Optional additions
Extend the route to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Westman Islands or northern Iceland.
A full Ring Road journey deserves considerably more time and should not simply be added to this route without increasing the overall trip length; overnight stops can easily be made along this road and there are plenty of spa’s to spend the day at such as Blue Lagoon.
Trip Highlights
Travel through dramatic scenery shaped by lava, glaciers, rivers and some of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls.
Waterfalls & Volcanic Landscapes
Experience the striking contrasts of Iceland’s South Coast, from vast ice fields to dark beaches and coastal cliffs.
Glaciers & Black-Sand Beaches
Relax in naturally heated waters and discover the geothermal activity that continues to shape Iceland’s landscape and culture.
