Introduction to Denmark

Denmark is compact, well connected and particularly rewarding for travellers who enjoy exploring cities on foot or by bicycle.

Copenhagen provides the landmarks that many first-time visitors expect, but its neighbourhoods, bakeries, harbour areas and everyday cycling culture are equally important parts of the experience.

Aarhus adds a different perspective. Denmark’s second major city combines cobbled streets and historical attractions with contemporary architecture, art, food and nearby coastline. Direct trains connect Copenhagen and Aarhus in approximately three hours.

Part One: Copenhagen

Days 1-4

Arrive in Copenhagen and transfer to your hotel.
Begin with a walk through the city centre towards Nyhavn and the harbour. Continue to the surrounding streets, stop for a drink or early dinner and enjoy your first look at Copenhagen’s colourful architecture.
Overnight: Copenhagen
Begin around the old city and explore the streets surrounding Strøget, Amagertorv and the Latin Quarter.
Continue towards Christiansborg Palace, the canals and the historic harbour. Depending on your interests, add Rosenborg Castle, the Botanical Garden or the National Museum of Denmark.
Finish the day in Tivoli Gardens when open, or spend the evening exploring Copenhagen’s restaurant and bar scene.
Overnight: Copenhagen
Move beyond the central landmarks to discover Copenhagen’s neighbourhoods.
Explore Nørrebro for independent businesses and multicultural food, Vesterbro for restaurants and creative spaces, or Frederiksberg for wider streets, gardens and cafés.
Include a visit to a Danish bakery and allow time for the city’s design shops, food markets or one of its design-focused museums.
Overnight: Copenhagen
Experience Copenhagen from the water on a harbour or canal journey.
Later, visit Christianshavn and explore the waterfront on foot. Depending on the season, continue towards the harbour baths, the beach at Amager or one of the city’s modern sauna and swimming experiences.
A guided bicycle tour can be incorporated for travellers who feel comfortable cycling in a busy urban environment.

Part Two: Aarhus

Days 5-7

Take the train from Copenhagen to Aarhus.
After checking in, explore the Latin Quarter, the riverside area and the streets surrounding the cathedral. Aarhus has a compact centre, making it easy to begin sightseeing shortly after arrival.
Finish with dinner in the city or near the redeveloped harbour.

Visit two of Aarhus’ most distinctive attractions.
ARoS Aarhus Art Museum represents the city’s contemporary cultural side, while Den Gamle By presents Danish urban history through reconstructed streets, buildings and interiors.
Alternatively, choose one major attraction and spend the rest of the day exploring the harbour, cafés and nearby coastal areas at a slower pace.
Overnight: Aarhus
Enjoy a final Danish breakfast before travelling home from Aarhus, connecting through Copenhagen or continuing towards another Nordic destination.

Optional additions

Travellers with an additional day could visit the castles of North Zealand, the coastal Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Roskilde or the white cliffs of Møns Klint.

Møns Klint lies south of Copenhagen and is known for its dramatic chalk cliffs overlooking the Baltic Sea.
