Introduction to Sweden

Stockholm and Gothenburg provide an excellent first introduction to Sweden.

Stockholm delivers grand architecture, royal history, leading museums and easy access to the Baltic archipelago. Gothenburg feels smaller and more relaxed, with a strong maritime identity, excellent seafood and islands that can be reached using the city’s public transport network.

Sweden’s official tourism organisation highlights the combination of urban culture and accessible nature as one of the country’s defining attractions. Stockholm has its archipelago on the doorstep, while Gothenburg provides straightforward access to the islands of Sweden’s west coast.

Part One: Stockholm

Days 1-4

Arrive in the Swedish capital and travel to your hotel.
Spend the afternoon getting your bearings around Norrmalm and the waterfront. Walk towards the Royal Palace and cross into Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s historic old town.
Choose a relaxed restaurant for your first dinner and enjoy an early evening beside the water.
Overnight: Stockholm
Return to Gamla Stan to explore its narrow streets, historic squares and colourful façades before the busiest part of the day.
Continue towards the Royal Palace and the Swedish Parliament, then walk along the waterfront towards City Hall.
In the afternoon, visit a museum connected to Swedish history or take a boat tour for a different view of the city’s islands.
Overnight: Stockholm
Spend the day on Djurgården, one of Stockholm’s greenest and most interesting islands.
Choose between attractions such as the Vasa Museum, the open-air Skansen museum, the Nordic Museum or ABBA The Museum. There is no need to fit everything into one visit; selecting one or two attractions creates a much more enjoyable day.
Pause for a traditional Swedish fika with coffee and something sweet before returning to the city centre.
Overnight: Stockholm
Leave the city behind for a day among the islands of the Stockholm Archipelago.
The exact destination will depend on the season and ferry timetable. Your excursion might take you to a lively harbour community, a peaceful island walking trail or a waterside restaurant.
The wider Stockholm Archipelago contains thousands of islands, skerries and rocks and begins within easy reach of the capital.
Return to Stockholm for your final evening in the city.

From Stockholm’s island cityscape to the relaxed harbours and rocky shores of Sweden’s west coast

Part Two: Gothenburg & West Coast

Days 5-8

Board a daytime train across Sweden to Gothenburg.
After checking in, explore the compact centre and walk along the canals. Continue into Haga, a characterful neighbourhood known for cafés, independent shops and traditional wooden buildings.
Enjoy dinner in the city or visit one of the restaurants associated with Gothenburg’s strong seafood tradition.
Overnight: Gothenburg
Begin with the city’s market halls, canals and central neighbourhoods.
Depending on your interests, visit the Gothenburg Museum of Art, the Universeum science centre, the renovated Feskekörka fish market or the gardens of Trädgårdsföreningen.
Spend the afternoon exploring more of Haga and Linné, or relax in Slottsskogen park.
Overnight: Gothenburg
Take a tram towards the coast and continue by passenger ferry into Gothenburg’s southern archipelago.
Spend the day walking between traditional houses, rocky shorelines and small harbours. Depending on the season, stop for lunch or coffee on one of the islands before returning to the city.
The archipelago contains more than 20 islands, with several accessible from central Gothenburg using public transport and ferry connections.
Overnight: Gothenburg
Enjoy a final breakfast and some free time before travelling to the airport or continuing your Nordic journey.

Optional additions

Add extra nights in Stockholm, stay overnight in the archipelago, visit Malmö and southern Sweden, or travel north for Arctic landscapes and Sámi cultural experiences.

For a longer journey, Stockholm can also be combined with Helsinki by overnight ferry or Copenhagen by rail.
